Mad Scientist Party

This party was definitely one of the most enjoyable parties I've planned. There are so many ideas to play around with and the thought of experiments and laboratories just appeals to my inner twisted child.

The mom of the birthday boy very cleverly booked the MTN Science Centre in Cape Town and the party took place in a small private room right in the middle of the Science Centre and all it's experiments.

My main job was the food, as the Science Centre already created the perfect backdrop. I did however add a little bit of a decor touch with this dangerous looking birthday banner. I also added a little bit of decor to the table with glass jars and bottles filled with strange creatures, eyeballs and mysterious colored liquids, as well as some atom serviette rings.

The table was over flowing with science themed food just like these bubbling beaker cupcakes

As usual I couldn't throw a party without including my theme decorated lollipops

And then some food specifically for a science party. Sour worms in a petrie dish of jelly, marshmallow lab rats and beakers of popcorn.

These popular treats also dressed themselves up well for this science event. Test tube and beaker cookies and electron cake pops

The mad scientist cake had all the necessary elements. A mad scientist taking center stage, bubbling over beakers, spilt test tubes, atoms, scientific theory and a lab rat.

For the drinks table I had jars filled with red and green cool drink.

I purchased the jar with the green cool drink in especially for this party because it comes with a built in tap which is great for getting just the right amount of juice out and looks very much like it belongs in a lab.

The kid's used these jars to fill up with the cool drink of their choice. I designed the label to make them look cute and added paper straws for aesthetics and practicality.

There was also water available for either the adults or the children. I also added science styled labels to these so they too could match the party.

The party packs I made for this party were meant to look like lab coats. They had pockets with a pencil in, the name of each child attending the party and some fun colorful glasses for each. I got this idea online from Spaceships and Laser Beams.

And just like the party pack implies this mad scientist party was a blast and all the little mad scientists and their creators had an amazing time.

A Visit to the Bow-tique

It's amazing how some themes just live on, I remember having a Minnie Mouse party for my second birthday. Well I guess I don't really remember the party as much as I remember the photos of the party from the album. Of course back then Minnie was red and white and not the cerise she is today. She also wasn't a career woman with her own bow-tique so I guess some things have changed.

I love working with silhouette version on Minnie and Mickey. I don't think they looked like this back when I was a kid either. But the round head with ears and a bow for Minnie works so much easier than trying to replicate the detail of the characters. And I think the simple image is far more aesthetically pleasing anyway.

This birthday banner turned out great using this concept. I made a stencil of Minnie's head and her bow and cut them out of cardboard. I couldn't find pink paper with white dots so I made my own dots by sticking round white stickers on the bows. I stuck with the traditional Disney font for this banner which I also cut out by hand. I then tied the Minnie heads together using pink ribbon with white dots.

The colors for the party were of course pink, black and white and we carried this into the table setup. We used tissue paper pom poms on the table as well as hanging to fill the empty space.

Other decor included a Minnie Mouse photo board.

The mousy food consisted of lollipops, mice crispie treats, cake pops and cookies.

A little added extra, which I don't often get to do for kid's parties, were these cute serviette rings that once again used the simple silhouette image of Minnie. This time I went with black ribbon with white dots as I knew the serviettes were going to be cerise and there needed to be a contrast.

For the party packs I used pink buckets and again used white stickers to add the Minnie dots. I also cut out some ears and made a bow with the same pink ribbon I used for the banner.

I also added a tag for each

Apart from the party buckets the kids also all got to take home a pair of Minnie ears. Apparently the manufacturers of these didn't get the memo that Minnie is no longer rocking red.

Although not for this party, I made these Minnie Mouse cupcakes recently for a client and she clearly also still prefers the old school Minnie as she wanted them to be red and white.

And finally a Minnie Mouse cake

I must say I'm not the biggest fan of red and although it did make Minnie stand out from her other girly competitors I think re-designing her in pink was a very clever marketing ploy on Disney's behalf. Everything seems cuter and more girly in pink and this is what most little girls want. So well done Minnie on your re-inventing yourself, we'll be seeing you around a lot I believe.
